If you thought SOPA or PIPA wait until you here The United States’ new implement on Internet control. In the year October 2007, nations started debating about a way to protect intellectual property. President Obama signed the treaty on October 1, 2011. ACTA could become an international law requiring some major changes in the U.S. economy. Many people have a problem with ACTA because of the way it first appeared out in the open. ACTA was proposed behind closed doors or secretly negotiated. Another problem with ACTA is the fact that the treaty could change drastically change several U.S. laws with out proper democratic process. Also the fact that unelected officials that runs huge corporations in the U.S. gain all the power.
The vague use of the word counterfeit or piracy puts us at risk. If you simply forget to give the owner credit because you used his song in a school video you could go to jail for the same amount of time as someone who simply downloaded an entire Bon Jovi album illegally. Not only does it affect the Internet but it could also affect the drug market since of its unclear usage of the word counterfeit. Affordable medicine could be a thing of the past if this treaty goes into affect. The limitations of enforcing trademarks and copyrights are unspecified giving Internet users a run for their money because sharing a link with a friend on Facebook could sentence them to prison.
